Quick Write

• Some critics of high schools indicate that there are very few alternatives for youth to express their individual differences. They say alternative schools provide the kind of individual instruction and support all youth need. What do you think? What schools can you name in your local school district that helps support students with social and academic challenges?

• Often kids say, “Alternative education schools are for “druggies” and “losers.” What do you think? Support your claim by citing some of the ideas from the articles that you read in session 1.

• Do you think that high school exit exams will put more kids at risk of school failure, which will mean an increase in the need for alternative education services? Explain your answer to a peer in your class.
