Alternative Education Overview:
Community Day Schools

Activity 1


  • Locate at least three Internet sites that describe a Community Day School or alternative school for expelled youth. Write an annotated bibliography and share with your class.
  • Make a phone call to a local Community Day School(s) or alternative school for expelled youth and talk with the director or a teacher to find out how it works and what services/programs are offered.
  • Find the School Attendance Review Board in your school district.  Write a 1 page summary of the functions and responsibilities of the Board, who serves on it, and how many cases the board handles each yea, and how each case is followed.
  • Under IDEA students with disabilities can be placed in alternative education settings. Locate the section in IDEA that describes alternative education placement for expelled youth and write the key elements of the law. Make sure you describe how the student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is addressed in alternative education settings.
  • Read the article entitled by Soleil Gregg entitled Creating Effective Environments for Disruptive Youth and pay particular attention to the Type I, II & III type schools. Determine what type of community day school(s) you have in your area.
