Module 10, Session 3

Activity 4

In their article Using Literature to Build Emotionally Healthy Adolescents [www.ascd.org/readingroom/classlead/0003/1mar00.html ] , Dixey and D’Angelo (2000), suggest that books can help people deal with problems and that there are three stages in the “bibliotherapy” process:

Earlier activities in this session have provided literature suggestions related to a range of themes and issues facing adolescents who may be in alternative education settings.  Facilitating the connection of these literature selections to the students’ own lives is the role of the skillful teacher.

Directions:  Review the article and the recommendations for literature selections and activities.  Choose a literature selection you think would resonate with your students and  design three activities (or a webquest, using the format from Activity 3).  Share them with your small group.
