Quick Write:
Identifying Challenges and Needs in
Alternative Education Settings

Jason, a 10th grader, has recently been placed at an alternative education setting. He has a history of inconsistent attendance and poor academic performance. He recently received his 3rd out-of-school suspension this year for his involvement in a fight on school grounds. He has a probation officer due to arrests in the community. Jason lives with his mother who has tried to get him counseling through the community mental health center in the past but he refused to continue after a few sessions. His mom has stated she is at “at her wits end” with him. Sometime in grade school, Jason was on medication for about 6 months for “problems paying attention”.

Discuss with a classmate the challenges you would anticipate an alternative education program may have being successful with Jason. Make a list of these challenges. Then make a list of the program components of an alternative education program that you feel may be needed to be successful with Jason.
