Activity 2

  • Divide the following words into syllables. If unsure, use the dictionary.

photograph                    microscope               dermatology

bibliophobia                   monologue                telephoto

hydrophone                   thermometer             democracy

metropolis                     hypodermic               chronometer

psychobiography           technocrat                 megapod

  • After dividing the words into syllables, circle the Greek combining forms in each word. This exercise will be repeated after Session 11.

NOTE: High school students should be encouraged to look for Greek-based words in a science text book. Use the unique letter-sound correspondences and the compounding as a clue.
