Activity 1


1. Look over the handout on spelling rules. Ask for clarification on any of the rules.

2. Look at the rule related to –ck. Discuss why the following words do not
use –ck:

peak

milk

shake

comic

technique

NOTE: With high school students you can dictate words and have them spell them in the correct column, either ck or k.

Example: ck k
  black bleak
  stock seek
  click snake
  stuck soak

Brainstorm as many words as you can using –ck, -tch, and –dge. Make lists.
Design a lesson for high school students related to using this rule.

3. Discuss why the following words are non-phonetic

watch love laugh one
only once cough want
eye double shoe sew
