Activity 2

Your instructor will repeat a number of words and count the syllables (e.g., muskrat (2), cheerfully (3) articulate (4), multisensory (5), green (1), provision (3), humor (2), and articulation (5)).

Divide the following words into syllables, and mark the vowel sounds as long or short. The macron (-) is the mark for long vowels, and the breve symbol ( ) marks the short vowel.

mitten tennis combat cupid
hobo begin campus kindred
simple shatter grumble plywood
grimy cabin pilot thunder

NOTE: Give high school students lists of words from student’s literature, text books, brochures, newspapers, and other grade level reading material for practice dividing words into syllables.
