Module 2, Session 4
Activity 1
Culturally Resonant
Curriculum
Directions: Write down your responses to the following questions,
then compare your responses with a partner or small group.
- When you hear the term “culturally appropriate curriculum,”
what does it mean to you?
- For a particular demographic of which you are a part, list some
examples of “culturally resonant” literature, films,
or music. (For example, if you are over 50, you may find that
movies about people who are over 50 “resonate” with
your experience; if you are a woman, you may find you identify
with strong feminine lead character in a book you are reading.)
- For the students in the alternative education settings in which
you teach, what are examples of “culturally resonant”
works that would engage your students?
- What is the danger of making assumptions about what is “culturally
resonant”?
