Small Group Activity 1
Jigsaw Reading:
"The New Urban High School-A Practitioner's Guide"
Group 1: Read the following section: Introduction (pp. 1-5).
Group 2: In the Case Study, The Chicago Vocational Academy, read the
following sections: New Designs, Preparing for Change, Supporting Teachers,
and Adult World Immersion (pp. 15-18).
Group 3: Read the following sections: The CVCA Family, Planning the Learning,
Exhibiting Work, Getting It Done, Looking Ahead, Occupational Specificity,
and Pedagogy (pp. 18-21).
Note: When reading, each group should take notes. After reading in small
groups, the entire class meets for a group discussion. A representative
from each group shares five main concepts learned from their assigned
reading. In the large group debriefing session, the following questions
should be addressed:
1. How the CVAA Academies are structured (i.e. - student programs).
2. Describe the five components of reform at CVCA?
3. How is CVAA's Staff Development Program structured?
