Case Study
Andrew
Andrew is a 17-year old African-American male who is in an alternative school
setting because he was arrested as one of four juveniles who stole a car
and went for a joy ride. He was adjudicated as delinquent. Andrew has had
a few prior arrests for possession of marijuana (about 2 years ago).
Andrew lives with his mother in an older, lower socio-economic status community
in a major city. He has not seen his father in several years and his mother
is an active alcoholic. Andrew's mother is usually incapable of giving him
guidance and support. He has no brothers or sisters.
Andrew has a history of oppositional behavior and conduct disorder. He also
is frequently depressed.
Andrew's grades have been poor (mostly D's) since the third grade, and he
is two years behind in school as a result. Despite his school problems,
Andrew is very bright and has an uncanny ability for repairing anything
mechanical.
He denies any physical abuse but reports that his father used to "whip
me until I couldn't walk." He denies any self-abusive or suicidal behavior.
He is very impulsive and is very aggressive at times-often starting fights
with other teenagers and young adults. He reports that he has few friends
and that all his friends have trouble with the law.
