Students in alternative education or at high-risk
for school failure are found in every school district or region in
the country. They are in regular classes or in five labels of
isolated placement:
1) schools
where there are high student failure rates;
2) special
classes,
3) continuation
schools,
4 ) childrens shelters and community schools,
5 ) regional court schools, ranches, or detention centers, and
6 ) statewide detention facilities.
Students with learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral disturbances,
mild mental retardation, or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders
make up a disproportionately high percentage of youth in these settings.
