Students in alternative education or at high-risk for school failure are found in every school district or region in the country.  They are in regular classes or in five labels of isolated placement:

1) schools where there are high student failure rates;

2) special classes,

3) continuation schools,
4 ) children’s shelters and community schools,
5 ) regional court schools, ranches, or detention centers, and
6 ) statewide detention facilities.

Students with learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral disturbances, mild mental retardation, or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders make up a disproportionately high percentage of youth in these settings.

Program Components

This program selects a core of critical teaching competencies from effective practice and develops the related knowledge, activities, and skills required for teacher preparation. It builds innovative pre-service and staff development activities and provides a wealth of Internet resources.
