Lecture Notes (Session 2)

 

1. Small Group discussion regarding their own pupilsĖ strengths/weaknesses and their ideas for preparing their students to work through this scenario (individual activity from Session 1).

 

2. Revisit the scenario to prepare for this session.

 

3. Revisit the themes (basic standards) to promote understanding of the math focus:

 

Fluency in Basic Computation and Procedural Skills

Communicate unknown values through use of signs, symbols, and graphs

Analyze and use tables, to solve problems involving rates and proportions

Develop logical thinking in order to analyze evidence

Apply mathematics to everyday life

 

4. Small Group Activity: work through the math problem to determine the number of workers that can fit in the new working space.

 

5. Discuss Small Group responses and focus on how each of the students would approach solving this problem based on their pupilsĖ abilities.
