Activity 1:
Clarifying Roles and Goals of Team Members

This activity is intended to help you further understand the importance of clarifying roles and goals of team members and to give you some experience in examining roles/goals in relation to job titles and behavior of individual team members. This activity can be done in a small group with one member of the group identifying a youth/family they are working with and other classmates asking questions to obtain the information as described below. (Role-play is possible as well.)

  • Using the attached worksheet, list all the people involved with a student you are working with who needs a wraparound team process. Consider persons involved with the student at home, school and in the community. List each person by their title rather than their name (i.e. mother, teacher, probation officer)

  • For each person you identified, see if you can identify the role they would say they are engaged in with that student and the goal they would say they have in mind in their role with the student. (Note: Roles are not the job titles. For example, a counselor may feel they are an advocate for the student.)

  • If you are unclear about perceived roles/goals of some people, think of their behavior at team meetings or the type of interactions they have with the student and/or family.

  • Then ask yourself the following questions:

      1. Were you able to identify each person’s perception of their role with the student and each person’s perception of their goal with the student?

      2. Were the role’s some people perceive they play different than what may be expected by their job title? By other team members?

      3. Did you identify people who were involved with the student who haven’t been included on the team who may be helpful to include?

      4. Did you identify any potential overlap of roles among team members?

      5. Did you identify any team members who have the potential for multiple roles which may be overwhelming or confusing for them?

      6. Did you identify any people with unclear roles/role

After completing above activity, make a list of other potential team members who represent natural supports, strengths, or have a resource needed to help meet a given need. Then generate a list of questions to use in a conversation with the youth/family to ensure their team is based on the values of wraparound.
