Introduction

In this module, teachers-in-training will learn the basics of assistive technology – what it is, who is eligible, school responsibility, how to consider it during the IEP process and strategies for implementation. This module will examine in depth assistive technology for reading, writing, communication and computer access.

Teachers can use information from this module to increase their understanding and awareness of assistive technology in order to become an effective IEP team member during the consideration and implementation process.

Knowledge and Skills

Teachers will:

1. Define assistive technology, assistive technology services and related laws.
2. Identify, define and understand the applications of assistive technology in the areas of reading, writing, communication and computer access.
3. Recognize the importance of a collaborative, team approach to the consideration process which includes family members in the decision-making process.
4. Learn effective assessment and implementation procedures.
5. Learn how to select appropriate software/devices for a student based on the student’s profile, environment and IEP goals and objectives.
6. Identify vendors and resources for assistive technology products.
