Activity 1
- Xerox the list of Antecedent Triggers for the students.
Decide on which ones cause problems for you. Add any additional relevant
triggers to the list and decide on how to minimize the effect of these
triggers in your setting.
- Case study:Kaplan, age 14, is a 9th grader who attends
an urban continuation high school. His achievement results place him
at approximately 3rd grade level in reading and early 4th
grade level in math. He lives with his grandmother. His father killed
his mother and is now in jail. Kaplan observed the murder, but has never
been willing to talk about it. He is the youngest of four children born
to his parents. All the other children are now living on their own.
Kaplan has a quick temper and is a reluctant learner. When he does not
know how to perform a task, he becomes belligerent and has the potential
of inciting other kids to act out for him. He comes to school in a taxi
because he has been thrown off the school bus. Using the information
from Sessions 1 and 2, discuss with another teacher or small group how
you would approach this situation. Write up your comments and be prepared
to share them with the class. What additional information do you need
to know about Kaplan and specify how you would obtain this information?(Adapted

- Identify threestrategies that can be used to prevent problem behavior
when high school students are transitioning from one class to another,
entering the classroom, and getting ready to work, or lining up for
an event. Decide on at least two other areas that can cause potential
problems. (Anticipate and remove, Anticipate and remove, Anticipate
and remove).
- How would you have high school age students construct their own philosophies
of preventing school or classroom behavioral problems? Discuss in pairs
or small groups.
