Counseling and Social Skills Development:
Counseling and Social Skills Programs

Objectives

This session begins with an introduction to counseling interventions for use in the alternative education setting. This session builds upon knowledge and skills developed in prior sessions that presented basic counseling skills for teachers. In this session, an overview of components of effective counseling programs is presented. A description of social skills programs follows. Components of social skills programs are discussed in detail and guidelines for conducting effective social skills programs in alternative school settings are included.

In this session, teachers will be able to:

  • Review components of effective counseling programs for use with students who are at-risk or high-risk.

  • Review components of effective social skills programs.

  • Review information on designing and conducting effective social skills programs.

  • Practice designing social skills programs using an example case study.

  • Discuss comprehensive counseling practices using an example case study.
