Case Study
Elena

lena is a 16-year old Hispanic female who resides with her parents and her 12-year old brother in a suburban home. Elena's parents both work full-time jobs, but spend as much time with their children as possible. Their parenting style is authoritarian.

Elena struggles in school, but has managed to pass every year. Part of her problem is due to a processing disorder, a learning disability that affects her ability to understand her class materials.

Elena has two groups of friends. One group is composed of good students who are very involved both at school and at a local church. The other group is known as "troubled" and has been known to smoke pot and shoplift.

Elena was recently arrested for shoplifting. Although she was with another girl who was carrying a bag of cannabis-she was not carrying any drugs. She denies having used drugs, but reports having used alcohol at parties.

Her parents have recently referred her to an alternative school placement. Since beginning in her new school about 6 weeks ago, she has had difficulty getting along with others and stays to herself most of the time.
